Kokomo, Ind. is the county seat of Howard
County, an emerging regional hub for jobs, shopping and entertainment in
north central Indiana. Kokomo sits at the heart of Indianaıs Route 31
manufacturing corridor, just 45 miles north of Indianapolis and 90 miles
south of South Bend, home of the legendary Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The Kokomo Tribune, too, is emerging as a regional source of news and
advertising services. The Tribune circulates primarily in Howard, Tipton
and Miami counties, but also reaches into northwestern Grant,
southeastern Cass, eastern Carroll and northeastern Clinton counties.
The Kokomo region is a growing and dynamic piece of north central
Indiana. From 1990 to 2001, the area has grown 5.5% in population and
11.3% in households. It anchors an approximate radius of 25 miles,
drawing workers to three major employers, a commercial district of two
malls and several strip shopping centers, a dynamic Route 31 commercial
district and one of central Indianaıs most honored and highly prized
renovated downtown areas.
Kokomo is well known as one of the countryıs most affordable places to
live with one of the top household income levels in the state. Average
income levels grew by 54% between 1990 and 2001 to $56,489. Major
employers include two Daimler-Chrysler transmission plants and one of
the worldıs largest aluminum mold foundries.
Kokomo is also the headquarters for Delphi-Delco Electronics, one of
the worldıs largest suppliers of high-tech automotive components, and
Haynes International, a manufacturer of high performance metal alloys.
Kokomo boasts the highest number of high-tech jobs among any community
in Indiana, including Indianapolis.
Well known for its quality secondary school systems, the Kokomo region
is also served by branch campuses for Indiana University, Kokomo/Purdue
University, Kokomo; Ivy Tech State College; and Indiana Wesleyan College
Nearby Mississinewa Reservoir, a myriad of local parks and recreation
facilities and numerous golf courses and other outdoor activities
support a prized Midwestern quality of life. Kokomo boasts its own
professional symphonic orchestra, has numerous community visual and
performing arts organizations and attracts nationally known performances
to the Eastern Howard Performing Arts Center. |
